I just got back from the Valuation Expo and wanted to share a few things that stuck with me:
First — I was encouraged.
There were a lot of appraisers there who looked like they’re in their 30s and 40s. That’s a good sign. It tells me we’re seeing a new wave step in—people who care about this business and want to help move it forward.
Second — there’s a real push for innovation.
The industry is finally starting to look ahead instead of just holding the line. There’s energy. There’s momentum. And the folks in the room weren’t just talking change—they were trying to build it.
But here’s the thing: real innovation doesn’t happen alone.
Too often, we confuse independence with isolation. Just because the appraiser down the street works in the same market doesn’t make them your competition. It just means they’re in the same boat.

If your town doesn’t have a lunch meetup or monthly coffee… start one.

If your state doesn’t have a coalition… reach out to the NAA and make it happen.
Because when you build connection, you build strength. And this industry could use more of that.
Third — let’s talk tech.

It’s time to move away from the Big Three software providers.

They’re bloated, slow to innovate, and honestly? Over it.
There are incredible new platforms emerging—web-based, AI-enhanced, and built for modern appraisers. I’m personally planning to switch in the next 6 months, and I couldn’t be more ready.
If you haven’t tried them, you should.
Not because it’s trendy—but because UAD 3.6 is coming, fees aren’t going up, and efficiency isn’t optional anymore.
At Hardesty Appraisals, LLC, we’re all-in on the future:

Appraiser-owned.

Tech-forward (without losing the personal touch).

Ready to work with people who care about quality.
If you’re a lender who values real expertise—or an appraiser looking for your tribe—we’re open for business and here to help.
Let’s leave this profession better than we found it.
